Event Held Date :

Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya successfully organized the regular monthly program Guff-Gaff on April 19, 2023. The guest speaker for the session was Dr. Janardan Lamichhane, an academician at Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and also the Dean of Kathmandu University School of Science. He delivered his talk on the topic “Natural Product Researches and Bioprospecting Approach”.

Dr. Janardan Lamichhane provided a broad overview of his work experience related to Biotechnology. According to Dr. Lamichhane, the scope and impact of natural products will escalate significantly by conducting research on different areas and will also continue to expand by providing opportunities for new discoveries for the dissemination of high quality work in this field. He also added that the medicinal plants and herbs serve as a traditional medicine for various types of diseases. Bioprospecting approach derives resources and products to benefit the agriculture that includes bio fertilizers and bio pesticides, and also supports in producing the veterinary antibiotics. Bioprospecting can be a great approach to find new chemical products from the natural resources that can help bio industries to commercialize, produce, and generate products useful to humans in order to generate large profits. The fact that the natural products do not contain harsh chemicals implies that it would contribute to less waste and also the amount of toxins produced would decrease in the drain. Dr. Lamichhane also highlighted on the benefit of organic beauty products for the skin and internal health of the people. Additionally, the use of organic products will have a positive impact in the environment in a long run.

Dr. Lamichhane concluded the talk emphasizing on spreading the awareness of sustainable bioprospecting approaches among people. The presentation was followed by an interaction session between the guest speaker and the participants. Eventually, the program ended with a brief closing remarks from the EGH coordinator followed by a light refreshment.
