Resources Himalaya Foundation and Environmental Graduates in Himalaya successfully organized our monthly program Guff-Gaff with Dr. Radha Wagle, Joint Secretary and Chief of Climate Change Management Division at Ministry of Forests and Environment. She presented a talk on “Importance of Gender Mainstreaming in Sustainable Forest Management”. Introducing the guest speaker and welcoming the participants by EGH Coordinator, the platform was handover to the speaker.
The topics like ecofeminist, feminist institutionalism, and role of women in sustainable forest management was mainly focused during the program. Introducing the concept of ecofeminism, the talk briefly explained various aspects of feminist institutionalism such as organizational structure and culture, formal and informal rules related to gender, gender activism and gender issues. Although there are many policies for the equal involvement of women in organizational and policy level, it is comparatively very low compared to men. Role of women should be broaden beyond the roles of household worker, caretaker, agricultural labor and traditional healer. Dr. Wagle suggested that there should be equal involvement of women at policy level with flexible working environment, implementation of code of conduct, proper gender budgeting and auditing to encourage women in sustainable forest management. The talk was followed by a discussion session and ended with the vote of thanks from the EGH Coordinator.
