PRALAD YONZON CONSERVATION FORUM (PYCF) SERIES LXXXIII

For the 83rd series of PYCF, we had invited Prof. Paras Mani Aacharya, Lecturer at Patan Multiple Campus as our guest speaker. The program was started with a welcome note by Ms. Anjana Suwal, EGH Coordinator and with the brief introduction of the speaker

Prof. Paras Mani Aacharya had his presentation entitled “Ecology and Conservation of Otters in Nepal”. He started his presentation with the introduction of otters about its habitat and its morphology. According to him 3 species of otter are found in Nepal. They are: Eurasian otter, Smooth-coated otter and Asian small-clawed otter. In Nepali the otters are also called as “pani oat” which are semi-aquatic carnivores in nature. He further added about the study and survey done about otter in Rapti, Begnas and rupa lake of Nepal which was followed with the differences between the three species of otter. Different photographs including the killing of juvenile otter, their scats and pub mark were also shown to the participants. At last he concluded his presentation with the challenges to save the otter and the opportunity for the study of otter in various regions of Nepal as the study is very limited till now.

 

The presentation was followed by discussion session.

 

The programme formally ended by a token of appreciation and a thank you note by Dr. Ramji Bogati, the Board member of Resources Himalaya Foundation (RHF).
